What do YOU want Japan’s new design research center to be?
21 Jun 2006 Category: Architecture, Fashion, Features, Graphics, Japan, Products, Technology
Let these names slowly melt on your tongue: Issey Miyake, Taku Satoh, Fukasawa Naoto and Tadao Ando. Already sounds good, doesn’t it? Even more so, if I tell you that the Issey Miyake Foundation tied up with Japan’s graphic design hero Taku Satoh and product design legend Fukasawa Naoto to create the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, (two-one two-one design site!) a research center for design in the middle of Tokyo - built by no other but Tadao Ando.

The big news about setting up such a place, which will be less of a museum and more a place for thinking about design and where things are actually made - got public last year. Now - finally - things seem to get moving: the building starts to grow and the talks and decisions slowly turn into reality.

They have their own website now and just uploaded their 21_21 logo (created by Taku Satoh, of course!) for everyone to download and play with.
Really!?? Allowing everyone to mess around with your logo is not exactly what most companies would encourage you to do, is it?! A nice opportunity to express what YOU would like such a design centre of the near future to be.

Here are some variations showing what PingMag would like the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT to be. (Well - we had some fun with it ;-)
Ryoko’s 21_21 variation:

Ryoko wants the 21_21 to be open and easy accessible for anyone.
(I guess that means that even dogs are welcome ;-)
Jon’s 21_21 variation:

Jon did a bit of programming (of course!) and fiddled around with the endless possibilities of 21_21. In his opinion 21_21 should be dynamic and ever-changing. Click here and refresh for some fun with numbers.
Nobumasa Takahashi’s 21_21 variation

I asked Nobumasa if he could quickly come up with a design based on the 21_21 DESIGN SITE logo and he did! Thanks a lot! Ping believes, that 21_21 should collaborate with up and coming designers and artists.
Tom’s 21_21 variation:

Tom gave his T-1 World Cup entry “Usagi” a cunning 21_21 disguise.
Uleshka’s 21_21 variation:

Uleshka acting as 21_21’s blue base

white cream typography slowly coming

and there you go: the 21_21 logo!

Delicious!!
Uleshka wants the 21_21 to be active, fun and involve lots of people to shape what design means in the future.
This is it! Now let’s see what you come up with!
You can add all your photos or images to the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT Flickr group - or simply browse Flickr to see what everyone else is currently designing with 21_21.
