Onedotzero_10: World Tour Kicks Off!
16 Jun 2006 Category: Events & Exhibitions, Features, Film / Animation, Graphics, Music, Worldwide
London-based festival of innovative moving image “Onedotzero” picks up talented visual artists from various categories such as music, architecture, graphic, gaming and others - faster than anybody else! On June 2nd, the festival launched its 10th anniversary of delivering the finest in visual works to the world. Be ready for their big world tour which already started - at the ICA in London.

entrance of the festival site - ICA - which is located near Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square

the bar at the ICA becomes the place for networking after each program
Onedotzero was established in 1996, the first festival that year was held over a weekend at the ICA, and introduced underground short films, music videos and trailers – and the festival quickly grew to become a ten day event and world wide tour. Japan got added to their long list of locations in 2001 and last year, the festival took place at 60 cities worldwide including Seoul, Stockholm, Sarajevo, Madrid and Istanbul, as well as 3 cities Tokyo, Sapporo and Shizuoka - in Japan itself.
The composed programs for the festival have been well-selected among the entries from around the world - from more than 2,000 different applicants. One great thing about Onedotzero is, that they entirely skip the silly charges most festivals require to showcase your work. Nice!

The title sequence produced by design studio Intro

This year’s main image consists of all sorts of keywords expressed in their films
The design studio chosen to create the title sequence of the commemorative 10th anniversary of the festival was Intro (known for their designs for Primal Scream and the Chemical Brothers. In contrast to last year’s design by Logan, which had a very slick and digital feel to it, this year’s appeal is much more low-tech characterized by monochrome designs with an analog twist. Art director Philip O’dwyer (Ex-member of State) created this year’s main image: a sphere which consists of all sorts of keywords expressed at the festival.
This year’s Onedotzero in London offered more than 20 programs to chose from including 10 short film & music video programs, 8 feature films and 6 talk sessions and educational programs.
A lot!!! So, let’s take a look at some programs possibly also coming to you this year.
New British Talent
“New British Talent” - a program collaborating with BBC Film Network - introduced many British film directors being super hot right now. There were numerous amazing experimental pieces by fresh young directors. Amongst these I found Lucy Lee’s “The Gate of Heaven,” a 2-minute animation with beautiful Asian motifs with oil-paint-like touch, particularly unforgettable.
Paul Fraser’s “Scummy Man,” which was a collaboration between Warp Films and Domino Records was a story of a 15-year-old drug addict girl, Nina and a scummy man, George. The short film was inspired by “When The Sun Goes Down,” by Arctic Monkeys, one of the most popular bands in UK at the moment.

Lucy Lee’s “The Gates of Heaven” is so picturesque.

So British! Paul Fraser’s “Scummy Man”

Thomas Hicks’s “I Turn My Face To The Forest Floor” was commissioned as part of a ‘Warp Records vs Creative Review‘ competition

Jonathan Wood’s “Hurry Home” plots the journey of a greetings card sent from one lover to another across the world.
Features
In the feature film category, a total of 8 films were screened. From the big hit series “Ski Jumping Pairs”, “Ski Jumping Pairs - Road to TORINO 2006” by Japanese director Riichiro Mashima to “What Have You Done Today, Mervyn Day?”, a documentary film collaborated between pop group Saint Etienne and director Paul Kelly. Further it screened 6 films by much loved directors whose earlier works were already featured on previous Onedotzeros: director Mike Mills’ “Thumbsucker”, “Being John Malkovich” by director Spike Jones, “Human Nature” by director Michel Gondry and “Mirrormask” by British cult artist and director Dave McKean.

“Thumbsucker” the first feature film by music video director Mike Mills is finally going to be released in Japan this summer

“Mirrormask” by Dave McKean whose talk session before the screening was very impressive!
Richard Fenwick RND Talk
On Monday 5th June a talk session by award-winning British director Richard Fenwick was held at the digital studio of ICA. Fenwick creates cool and beatiful music videos, shorts, commercials and documentaries in all perspectives on the theme of contemporary media communication. At his talk session, he introduced his experimental project “RND#”.
Fenwick: “RND is one of the programmer’s most enduring commands: the ability to add randomness to data. The RND# project deals with this collision head on; between life and technology,; between inert machinery and the chaotic nature of reality. And in the process, questions society’s hugely weird and wired reliance on technology itself.”

The digital studio in ICA. Fenwick’s RND# project was shown on computers.

Director Richard Fenwick, who enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of this small room and many questions from young film makers.
Innervisions: warp, anatomy of brand
A panel session “Innervisions: Warp, anatomy of brand” held on 8th June was representing independent electronic record label Warp Records which is not only leading UK’s electronic music scene but also a leading force in the rest of the world and Warp Films.
The discussion was about the history of the label and their passion for innovative music video production. The guest speakers included the label manager Phil Canning and head of production Barry Ryan from Warp Records, film director Alex Rutterford who produced the music video of Autechre’s “Gantz Graf”, and also Robin MacNichols and Matt Bateman from Flat-E, who recently visited Japan for the i-WARP event at Ageha, Tokyo.

Autechre’s “Gantz Graf” directed by Alex Rutterford. His community on MIXI (Japanese version of My Space) has over 800 members.
Innervisions: Group Mentality
At “Innervisions: Group Mentality” on 9th June, 3 design companies had a 20-minute presentation about how they work and what they do: Simon Taylor and Michael Horsham from Tomato showed the projects for the clients in the different countries and explained how they approach to work as a group. London-based Airside who seemed to have great relationship among the company showed the several different kind of projects from Coca-Cola to Stitches which have been making Japanese ladies in 30s and British men in 20s go crazy. Mateus De Paula Santos from Brazil-based design studio Lobo introduced projects including the great collaboration with American garage band the Flaming Lips.

From the left, Mateus De Paula Santos, Simon Taylor and two of Airside, Michael Horsham

Wavelength 06
One of the most popular programs was the music video program “Wavelength 06”. “Birds” - produced by a frequenter of Onedotzero Pleix and “High Fives” produced for the DVD of Four Tet by Ed Holdsworth were truly impressive. Colder’s “To The Music,” the first music video by UVA, who came to Japan for last year’s Onedotzero presenting an audio-visual performance with Trevor Jackson - was one of the most noteworthy works in this year’s festival! (You can check out the music video of “To The Music” on the official site of OUTPUT Recordings.)

Vitalic’s “Birds” directed by France-based studio Pleix.

“High Fives” (Four Tet) directed by Ed Holdsworth. 4 of his films were screened at Onedotzero this year.

“War Photographer” (Jason Forrest) directed by Joel Trussell from the U.S.
Wow+Flutter 06
“Wow+Flutter 06” - a collection of short films - could also be seen as the program of Onedotzero. Impressive ones were: South African The Blackheart Gang’s “The Tale of How,” which has been created with absolutely no budget but by investing a lot of time: 9 months! “Seed” by Ed Holdsworth, who also takes part in “Wavelength” program. “Ichav” was a parody version of iPod TV commercials by Simon Hill, and Luois Nieto’s “Carlitopolis” was a story of a poor mouse which is about to be a subject for some crazy experiments.

Simon Hill’s “ichav” is the parody of ipod’s tv ad with his own soundtrack. It got a great laugh from the audience!

“Carlitopolis” by Luois Nieto made some audience scream

“Seed” by Ed Holdsworth is a beautiful work which uses Japanese design as its motif.
Extended Play06
The most enjoyable program for this year could be “Extended Play06” a collection of digital short films and animations. In this section, 12 films including “Right Place” by Japanese director Kosai Sekine, who has chosen as one of the “SHOTS New Directors” by UK’s SHOTS magazine, and “What Goes Up Must Come Down” by director Adam Smith, who is known as a director of music videos of The Streets, were showcased. The center of attention was a black comedy: “Who I Am and What I Want” co-created by animation director Chris Shepherd and illustrator/artist David Shringley. (if you want to check this out, DVD single is out now from Onedotzero DVD label!).

“Who I am and What I Want” by Chris Shepherd and David Shrigley released on the Onedotzero DVD label.

Charlie Creed-Miles from a film “Nil By Mouth” plays one of the main charactors of “What Goes Up Must Come Down” directed by Adam Smith.

“Right Place” by Japanese director: Kosai Sekine

Run Wrake’s “Rabbit” that children find an idol in the stomach of a rabbit, is a great fairytale but not for kids!
Terrain
“Terrain” focused on urbanizing contemporary cities. The short film “Borderline” by Alex Chandon was one of the most amazing pieces in this program. On 4th June Chandon himself appeared on stage before the screening and introduced his new film in which familiar views of London - such as famous places or roads got turned upside-down. “Borderline” shows you the city of London transformed in a surrealistic way by special effects. Worth watching!

“Borderline” by Alex Chandon

“Borderline” by Alex Chandon

“The Berlin Infection” by director Peter Kinder, who graduated from Bartlett school of architecture that also had produced a amazing directors, Lynn Fox.

Richard Fenwick’s “RND#16 Artificial Worlds v.3.0”, which was shown at the exhibition in ICA’s digital studio too.
Finally, we get to the person who had the vision, the mission and who probably works hardest every year to make Onedotzero possible: festival director Shane Walter!
Here is what he has to say to all of us still waiting for Onedotzero to come to a city or country near us:
Onedotzero is proud to present it’s 10th anniversary at the forefront of progressive moving image. It has been a significant ideas generator, a visual ideas lab and inspiration engine throughout it’s ten year history with a remit to entertain, educate and inspire the next generation of creatives. It has provided a platform and test bed for radical new ideas and talent and this year the adventures in moving image continues with a packed international tour acknowledging our heritage with a firm gaze to the future ten years.
We look forward to connecting new cities, new work, new creatives and new audiences, for a new beginning and what is next.

Festival director, Shane Walter finds new talent with his keen eye…

Onedotzero in London ended on a high note
Onedotzero 10 will call at Toronto until 18th June, then go to Singapore from 22nd and Dublin from 23rd and will continue touring the rest of the world. It will take some time to come to Japan (Click here for Onedotzero_nippon web site), so if you find Onedotzero during your holiday, we definitely recommend come and take a look at the exciting motion graphic world.
Check out their website for a location near you and enjoy!

Thanks for your writing. I would also like to say that your health insurance agent also utilizes the benefit of the coordinators of any group insurance. The health broker is given a directory of benefits wanted by somebody or a group coordinator. What any broker will is look for individuals or maybe coordinators which usually best fit those requirements. Then he shows his advice and if each party agree, the particular broker formulates a contract between the 2 parties.
