All about soccer ball design

Now that the World Cup has started and causes countless people around the world to watch the same thing at the same time, let’s take a look at what they are actually starring: THE BALL! In this article PingMag introduces a cross-section of all sorts of balls: from the official FIFA final ball, to designer balls, DIY balls, soccer ball graphics, football food and the matching bra.

written by Uleshka

1. The official ball

There doesn’t seem to be one ball really - even for each World Cup the latest technically improved ball replaces the previous one aiming at more precision, less fluctuation in weight while played and creating another opportunity to display the latest trend in professional soccer ball design.

After Charles Goodyear invented the first rubber ball in 1855 (which looked more like a basketball actually) designs and improvements for the ball of the game were unstoppable.

Whenever you are asked to draw a soccer ball, you will most likely come up with the ordinary 32 panel black and white ball (even though it is quite difficult to draw a proper soccer ball and get the b&w dots right… ever tried?). This choice of color was actually made for broadcasting on b&w TV sets (in order to see the ball better). Still many of today’s designs stick to this traditional color-code, although top technology balls like the recent Official World Cup Match Ball look entirely different.

Fevernova - World Cup 2002 Final Ball

Teamgeist - World Cup 2006 Final Ball with new 14 panel system

This year’s ball is called Teamgeist (team-spirit) and fulfills the strict FIFA-rules of how a ball is supposed to be. They invented a new 14 panel system which looks very dynamic (as opposed to the usual 32 panel honeycomb design).

Did you know that Adidas made all official World Cup Match Balls since 1970? I was surprised to hear that such an international matter could lie entirely in the hands of a one German sports gear company.

2. Alternative designs

Soccer is not only played by the world’s top players, of course but by everyone. Sadly, nearly 80% of all handstiched footballs were made in Pakistan (mainly in the city of Sialkot) with child labor up until 1996, during the European championship, when activists successfully pressed this issue which led to the Atlanta Agreement. This agreement forces ball manufacturers to make sure no child labor is involved in the fabrication of their products. I really do hope that the production process of soccer balls (and many other products…) got much better, so that kids around the globe have a chance to enjoy this game.

In case you are in the lucky position to purchase a shiny new ball, there is an enormous variety of designs and different manufacturers. PingMag picked some for those who like it sporty, designy or funny:

The best ball, is of course the signed ball. Get yours from Its already signed 4U

Optima Soccer Ball from Wilson - very slick and sporty!

Baden - Black Flame Soccer Ball (they have an impressive design range)

Baden - Tie Dye Soccer Ball

Baden - Red Hawaiian Ball

Stylish street wear/sports gear companies like Puma use the World Cup as a good opportunity to push their design design-side of products by choosing said-to-be cool designers to invent alternative designs for a 32 panel ball.

… and - slightly different but even more cute: a Anpanman Ball!

3. Soccer for the people

For some, soccer is just the opportunity to use its’ popularity to point to some social/environmental issues. One Japanese project was the “Peace Ball” (related to the Peace Boat Project) - a project of Think the Earth. One part of the Peace Ball project was to encourage participants to collect soccer balls from their homes and schools to send them to Think the Earth. These balls were then delivered to children worldwide via Peaceboats on their round-the-world tours. The other part of the project was to design a special Peace Ball Package which contained a globe shaped soccer ball by Toyobo Co., Ltd. and a beautiful set of Magnum Photographers post cards (showing scenes of children and soccer balls captured by Magnum Photographers). 62,360 Yen were raised in 2002 to support Peace Boat.

Then there are more general projects like promoting Fair Trade with the soccer balls from the Lohasy site or the soccer ball made of recycled materials by Venezuelan designer Totuna.

Something less general and more local-social: I came across a very unusual way to play soccer in Ashbourne, Shrovetide. This British town gets split in half once a year forming two teams. There are two goals at the opposite sides of the city and the game lasts two days. The rules? All citizens play against each other at once! Looks hilarious and they have beautifully designed balls every year!

4. The Do-It-Yourself soccer ball

In case you don’t have the cash or prefer to create your own ball: some stuff combined with tape will do! There are some nice graphics by Anónimo Studio in the new Die Gestalten Play Loud! book about how to build a proper ball out of two different size Tetra-Pack drink containers.

make your own ball out of Tetra Packs by Anónimo Studio, detail

Some designers took this idea a little further and started to design a proper soccer tape. Crumble up some sports news and tape around = done! Here are some examples by Marti Guixe and Kesselskramer.

Having a low-budget ball in mind, the Het Parool campaign by Kesselskramer introduces the all-newspaper-ball for only 25 Gulden.

5. Soccer Ball Graphics

It seems like this year, designers of all disciplines pushed themselves to their very limit to wrench that last bit of soccer inspiration out of them. I have never seen so many cool graphic designs for soccer as in this year (…and I remember those times well, when designers were too cool to show any interest in soccer! Now what made them change their minds?)

An interesting concept for World Cup T-shirts comes from Japanan’s creative producers Itoi Jimushou. Last year Mr. Itoi askesd the creme-de-la-creme of the Japanese design scene (Taku Satoh, Fukasawa Naoto, Aoki Katsunori, Kashiwa Sato…) to design a T-Shirt for him. Well, who needs another T-shirt is what you might say, but it became huge and spread across all design media in Japan - simply because all those interesting people gathered together - and obviously had a lot of fun! This year, they extended their idea of the T1 World Cup (that’s what the competition is called) and invited international designers from all sorts of disciplines like Stefan Sagmeister, Klein Dytham architects, Erik Spiekermann, Oded Ezer, Hamansutra, Kinga, Poledesign, Phunkstudio, Usman Haque… to design a T-shirt. Nice one! I think I have never seen such an unusual mix of T-shirts together! Those really make me want to know where each designer got his/her ideas from…

Another design competition with a stunning line-up of artists is the FIFA World-Cup poster exhibition. Here are two of my favorite posters having a soccer ball as the main theme.

The Luo Brothers for the FIFA World-Cup poster exhibition

Tenmyouya Hisashi for the FIFA World-Cup poster exhibition

If you are thirsty for more soccer graphics Die Gestalten have not only one, not two but three different books about soccer design on the market! Amazing!

6. Soccer Ball adverts

Now there are many soccer ball adverts of course (and many more to come during the World Cup), but here are two which I chose for their true use of material: the first one is by KleinDytham architects who covered the entire construction facade of the Omotesando Hills during the last World Cup in Tokyo with grass. I remember that people stopped to touch the facade and realize, that it was real grass growing as a vertical soccer field.

all grass facade for Adidas by KDarchitects

The German Postbank actually covered an entire soccer field with bright yellow Postbank soccer balls creating a new ball-world-record. Looking at that soccer field makes me want to dive in and play… maybe I visited IKEA too often as a kid swimming in their ball-pool…

7. Fashion and Lifestyle

Soccer gadgets are currently raining from the sky…well, no! They are actually closer to a monsoon pouring from the sky! Amongst all those ridiculous things such as Luis Vuitton soccer balls, soccer ball designs for alloy wheels, soccer ball contact lenses, incredibly expensive cheesy soccer ball gold earrings or teenager soccer ball bean bags - are some truly original designs to be found.

Besides all young designy brands such as Nike, Puma and Adidas currently turning into Nike Football, Puma Football and Adidas Football something similar happens in the high fashion industry with designers like Picard, Hugo Boss etc. expanding on their football fashion range. The one who probably takes soccer fashion most seriously of all is Dirk Bikkembergs. He used to design all official off the pitch evening wear of Inter Mailand, then decided to buy a small soccer club - the FC Fossombrone - and now clings onto his mission to bring high class soccer fashion to everyone (… who can afford his prices!). In case you never heard of him, he has an amazing range of soccer shoes (which is said to scare the shit out of Nike). This red and green shoe alone has sold over 1 million times.

Triumpf soccer ball bra

One other item I found worth mentioning here is the amazingly cute soccer ball bra from Triumpf: a grassy green bra with two goals and different size soccer-ball paddings fitting perfectly in those “goals”. Wow! Quite brave to show off your padding…

If you are really lucky and have a sexy soccer-bra-girl awaiting you at home, then there is probably nothing else you would fancy. However, there are some nice “soccer substitutes” to satisfy the senses of those who haven’t.

First off: clean your shoes with this stylish Kick’n Brush shoe-polisher from Volker Albus. Then turn on the stylish soccer ball lights by Suzukike.

8. Soccer Sweets

To finish off this detailed soccer ball course: let’s have dessert!

choco soccer balls

candy filled soccer man

Not sure about you, but all through my childhood we had those choco balls wrapped in colorful aluminium foil. Choco soccer balls seem like a relict of my past! This other funky Candy Filled Soccer Man just crossed my way this morning at the Food Show in Shibuya.

And here we go with our final desert recommendation: Hot Soccer Buns from a local bakery! Yum!

  1. Great Article! It’s even better because FIFA World Cup is airing right now; and Japan is by winning 1-0 against Australia right now (first half)!

  7. Very nice article.

And while I am here I feel sad with my friends for Japan losing to Australia. But of course they will win the next game. And eventually kick Brazil out of the World Cup.

In the meaning time I need my own set of soccer beer mats and red/yellow cards.
