10 Pictures of Tokyo Gotham

The use of HDR images (High Dynamic Range) is another photography trend that has recently been gaining mainstream popularity. Thanks to the internet, it’s very easy for photographers of all levels to learn how to perform these techniques on their own images, as we have seen on PingMag with the technique used in 10 Tiny Tokyo Photos. The technique in that article - which makes birds-eye-view photos of real buildings resemble tiny miniature models - created a mini boom in the world of amateur photography, fascinating photographers and the people viewing the photos with how easily the eye can be tricked. HDR images are now set to be the next mini trend - in this article I’ll explain what HDR is and show you some experimental HDR images, taken in Tokyo.
Written by Jon.
The main concept behind High Dynamic Range imaging is that you are taking several normal photos and combining them. By combining photos of the same scene at different exposure levels, you create a a surreal image with hyper-real colours and detail. The technique actually has real-world applications when taking indoor shots, when you want a level of detail that a single exposure will not allow.

This sequence of photos shows 6 different exposure levels of the same scene. Looking at the bottom-right photo, you can see that whilst the detail of the woodwork is very clear, the stained glass window is too bright and is overexposed, losing the detail. However, if you look at the top-middle and top-right exposures, the detail in the stained glass is much clearer but the woodwork detail is completely black. By combining all of these photos into a composite, we can create a “best of both worlds” photo - a photo that shows all of the details possible.

The combining of these photos can be achieved using Photoshop CS 2 or specialist software such as Photomatix. The resulting photos give a surreal, otherworldly feel - almost as if you are looking at a painting, or a computer rendering of the same scene. I went out on a cloudy, grey day in Tokyo with a tripod and took multiple exposures of various places in the city. Combining my exposures into HDR images, normal buildings took on an atmosphere of menace - the grey tone of the sky became much stronger and the detail level of the buildings themselves seemed to make them bear down on you - therefore I nicknamed this set of photos “Tokyo Gotham”…
One tip though - HDR photos are best viewed LARGE so you can see all the detail - click the link under each photo to see a large version.

My “test” shot - a view from the IMG SRC office building, looking onto the backstreets of Shibuya. The Cerulean Tower hotel is the tall building right at the back, poking over the top of the foreground. View the large version of this image to see the incredible amount of detail in the buildings, that extends as far as the horizon.

The ubiquitous Prada building in Aoyama. In the HDR image, the glass has taken on a green hue - also take a look at the detail on the tree to the left.

An HDR view of Ginza.

Skyscrapers looming down on you.

The Nakagin Capsule building - looking more grey than ever before.

An HDR view of the new Omotesando Hills building - the glass looks strangely luminous and the reflections on the upper sections seem “too” vivid…

Lots of shadowy stairs on this office building.

An otherwise normal stone staircase looks like something out of a Japanese horror movie in this HDR image.

Cluttered buildings in the Shibuya backstreets.

A gloomy Tokyo Tower in the distance.
I hope you enjoyed these photos. If you would like to see more, there are lots of great examples of HDR photography in the flickr HDR group. If you would like more details on how these photos are made, you can follow this two step tutorial, and also look at the info on the Photomatix site.

It’s a cool effect, but the bright contours of the buildings merging with the dark sky make it feel really odd to me. NDgrad filters still have some use in them it seems :)

Awesome pics, Jon. I haven’t heard about HDR until this article. I really like the surrealism about them. The remind me of really detail and intricate 3D renders rather than real life photos.
Posted by: G on April 14th, 2006 at 4:40 pm
G > funny you should say that, because in fact, that’s why HDR was invented - to use in 3D rendering. I’m not too sure about the details though - maybe someone else can explain it!
Posted by: Administrator on April 14th, 2006 at 4:45 pm
HDR is used to create the illusion of a background, to self illuminate the rendered scenes as if from matural light, and to add nice reflections to objects in the rendered scenes.

The surreal feel of these photos isn’t due to HDR, it’s due to bad HDR; HDR images can look natural.

BTW, the images themselves are nice; “bad HDR” can be used to make nice, artistic images. It’s just that if you wanted a more natural HDR rendition of these scenes, you could achieve it.

to Anonymous: that’s very true, but at the same time, the look of these images couldn’t be achieved WITHOUT using HDR, so I’m not sure if it’s so easy as to just pigeonhole things and say “this is good HDR” and “this is bad HDR” - people are just using it in different ways for different goals.

A comment from a 3d graphics guy.
Heh. This seems to actually be pretty much the opposite of HDR in 3d rendering.
This photo technique seems to have the goal to normalise the luminicity across the whole image, makeing everything equally exposed, just as in a 3d rendering NOT using HDR.
Therefor it looks like its 3d rendered.
Though, HDR 3d rendering, means you use a lot higher precision for the color channels, makeing it possible to calculate light much better, makeing it possible to have a larger range of luminicity levels in the image, just as in a photo.. Makeing the rendered image look like a photo.
Fun :)
Posted by: alh on April 14th, 2006 at 7:51 pm
maybe it should really be called LDR for “Low dynamic range”, since what it does is take several images with different luminicity levels for different parts, and then “squash” the range to a smaller range of luminicity levels, by selecting about the same luminicity levels from different images into the resulting image.

Posted by: Lowe on April 14th, 2006 at 8:12 pm
sorry…but these are really bad HDR pics. Awful Halos on everything. These are the kind of pics that people predicted years ago would start appearing everywhere once people cottoned on to a HDR app and just pushed a few default buttons rather than actually paying attention to the image.

Did you tuned colors with photoshop levels and curves? Or the picture just turns out to be so saturated only thanks to photography technology?

The images are interesting.
Here’s a challenge:
do it without using Photoshop or other digital photo editors.
Techniques and methods of production have been falsified by the computer, but if we look back into the 70’s we can see that a similar effect was created using multiple exposure settings on one frame with an HDR type film.
The inconsistencies produced using analog techniques yeilds a rougher image, but seems to complement the aesthetic.
