Long long time ago, I found a very strange looking inflatable bunny in some beach shop in Brighton. It was supposed to be for kids, but it looked just too cheesy and so I just bought it for a laugh. Back home, I blew it up and put it in the corner of my room. Ever since then I got totally fascinated by the cheesiness of inflatable animals.

The inflatables we usually see are made to be your best companion for the beach. Lots of friendly smiling fish like sharks, dolphins and … what kind of fish was Nimo again? Kids ride them all along and even adults do. Well - don’t those funny creatures just remind you of some hot summer days?

Have you ever seen an inflatable lobster?

Oops! I just ate his friend!

And of course there are animals which live quite far away from beaches, too.

When you start to think about the meaning of inflatables… Are they really for kids to play with?

Well, certainly better than playing with real snakes, I guess! And you can probably save some time taking your kids to the zoo as well…

kangaroo

parrot

monkey

seems like this real giraffe cannot tell the difference to her inflatable friend
However, when adults start to pay attention to inflatables, the meaning often starts to go into a wrong direction…

whow! hairy chest!

I’m not sure which one is more weird to be honest…
I find it equally funny, when people try to put a political meaning to inflatables, such as these cute Bushes.

But - there are some respectable people who make interesting pieces of inflatables. This big inflatable TV was designed by a student group called Little Big Bang in Baltimore, USA in 1998. Their idea was to get people away from the TVs in their living rooms and rather have some fun together blowing up a huge inflatable TV set.

A really good example for inflatables is this huge, life size whale I found on the web. A great idea to show kids how big those animals really are.

And finally - my biggest surprise! Let me introduce to you: the inflatable pub!

inflatable pub

Oooooh! Makes me want to have a beer immediately…
No doubt, this one is an invention of a British bloke!
Now that really makes me want to get out of the office… Hope I find an equally strange location to have a quick pint in Shibuya. Cheers and… see you again tomorrow!
