Simon Faithfull: 12 postcards from Berlin

#1 - Kreuzberg

In the summer the no-man’s-land by the S-Bahn tracks is a secret garden. Follow the path off the main road, through the thick undergrowth, past a derelict building and eventually you emerge into a sunlit oasis – Berlin invisible behind the dense trees. White sand has been imported, a makeshift bar constructed and mellow music drifts across the 16 beach volleyball courts - every now then an S-Bahn train rumbling past on its way to the centre.

Now though chunks of ice have been lying on the pavement for weeks. I’ve never thought of water as a proper solid before - ice is supposed to be something that is there in the morning or comes from the fridge – a fragile temporary condition not a stable rock form… I’ve seen ice landscapes in far-flung places but never seen it take over a city. Simon Faithfull, is an artist based in London and Berlin, who is currently showing his new works at the group show “Wandering Rocks” at Gimpel Fils, London.

One of Simon’s on-going projects is a series of drawings done on his Palm Pilot. (A nice animation of scenery from a car window, London to Paris, can be viewed here).

What’s unique about the work he is exhibiting in London now, called “12 Postcards from Berlin”, is that throughout the exhibition Simon literally sends his new drawings to the gallery as e-mail-postcards. His new work will be completed with 12 drawings as he gradually moves clockwise around Berlin, keeping the “Fernsehturm” (the tele tower) at the axis of his journey. Nice little project, huh?

I really like the fact that he is using his Palm Pilot as a sketch pad for his art. It’s an interesting combination of low tech/high tech… (I mean traveling, computer, e-mail, drawing, etc, etc.)
