FISHMANS live and exhibition

2 Dec 2005 Category: Events & Exhibitions, Japan, Music

Have you ever heard of Japanese band, Fishmans? Don’t correct me by saying it’s Fishmen (which my English teacher once did. I told her, “but, teacher, it’s a band name!”) Anyway, Fishmans performamed at SHIBUYA-AX, on November 22nd. Since singer Shinji Sato passed away in 1999, we have thought that we would never experience their magical live act ever again. However, inviting 7 talented singers, orininal member Kinichi Motegi (currently playing in Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra), Yuzuru Kashiwabara (currently in Polaris) and other support member of those days came together to have kick ass show!

Fishmans live!

after the show. everybody’s rushing their way out of venue, SHIBUYA-AX extracredits2=people making long queue to get T-shirts

On the way to the venue, I came accross with bunch of boys and girls standing with cardboard sign “Any extra tickets?” in freezing weather. It was huge competition to get their ticket for the show. I felt a bit guilty, but would I want to give away mine? Hell, no!

I like them too much to write about them coolly. To me, Fishmans was the band who taught me how great being in a live show. I know many people goes, “I like their early materials,” or “No, later works are the best.” But I think, no matter which period the songs from, Fishmans’ live performances had made me love all of their songs.

This time, already established singers such as UA, Ikuko Harada from Clammbon, Chung-Ho Sai from bonobos, pod from Thai band, Moderndog sang in turn. The girl next to me was weeping from very beginning to the end, but yes, it was very moving night.

I don’t think I can described how I felt in words, but I just got the news that this live performance, “THE LONG SEASON REVEUE” will be made into a movie next year! So, if you have a chance, please check them out!

And I have another Fishmans related news for you. “THE FISHMANS EXHIBITION” is taking place at NANZUKA UNDERGROUND in Shibuya until December 30th. As a tribute to the band, visual artists like Naohiro Ukawa, ENLIGHTENMENT, and Kiyoshi Kuroda created original jackets for this exhibition. I will check them out next week.

The show lasted 3 hours and 30 minutes! Not being young anymore, it was physically hard to keep standing this long, to be honest (well, I have no stamina or whatsoever.) But I ccould rediscover the fact that I love music so much!
