I went to see Wisut Ponnimit Solo Exhibition “inside the wall” at Ikejiri Institute of Design(IID) last week. The day I went, they were having opening party with special performance, which is live wall drawing by Wisut and Japanese cartoonist, Kotobuki Shiriagari. As a big fan of manga, I was so excited to see this event!

Live drawing were supposed to start at 7:00. But when I got there on 6:30, dense crowd were already piled up on the one corner. Pushing my way out through the throng, Wisut was about to finish his first drawing on the big white wall.
Seeing him draw for a while, I realized that Wisut was doing facial caricature of the audience. Shiriagari joined in casually, and thier performance was started just like that.
I heard that they were originally planning to do “cartoon relay.” Then seeing so many people showed up, Wisut suggested to do somehing else, something capture this atomosphere, hence, facial caricature was brought up instead. Naturally, crowd of people were trying to get artists’ attention. “Hey, pick me!”
Anyway, once the show started, they drew people’s portraits at a speed of light! The walls were filled with smiley faces right before our eyes. Though they were doing it in a breeze, portraits capturede each character so well. We were all proud of becoming a part of the exhibition, being drawn on the wall in the end!
Besides our faces on the wall, Wisut new paintings are exhibited at the show. If you have a chance, please check out his new paintings and our happy faces at the exhibition.
