RESFESTcame to Japan again! RESFEST has been a cool showcase of innovative short films, music videos, and animation. In its 9th year (7th in Japan) now, they decided to take out the word “digital film festival” from their logo. I guess “digital” has penetrated into our everyday life almost too much, and “digital” doesn’t represent what they originally intended to say anymore, which was “fresh” or “innovative.”
I went to see their 2 programs at Laforet Museum Harajuku a while ago. To be honest, there were no “Holly cow!” moments from what I’ve seen. That’s not because the quality of the films weren’t good, but because we’ve got used to seeing cool moving images, I think.
I personally liked “Exit/Delete First Sight” (directed by +cruz and Sun An from W+K Tokyo Lab) and French collage video, “Paysage en Mouvement”.
“Exit/Delete First Sight” was very fantastical work that reminded me of Stan Brakhage so much. The flood of the color and quiet white spaces created a magical atmosphere throughout. “Paysage en Mouvement” on the other hand, had very weird atmosphere. It was very beutiful, but I got strange feeling(like when I see something wrong, but I can’t put my finger on it.)
And I definitely have to mention about their closing party at SuperDeluxe on their last day of Tokyo tour, because that was a great party! Along with special appearance of Jonathan Wells(RESFEST festival director/founder), directors ,VJs, and performers paid a visit to this special occasion. The director Yuichi Kojima introduced super dancers who performed in his work “I MY ME MINE” (music video for Plosysics) to the audience. 10-year-old break dancer, Strong Machine Number 2 and Michael Jackson dance group mj-spirit blowed our mind.
Strong Machine Number 2 just stole everybody’s heart by great performance. Beer in their hands, all grown-ups turned out to be proud parents. They screamed out for her and fought to get her autograph. And mj-spirit perfectly imitated Michael Jackson dance performance. I’ve never seen real Michael, but I felt like I was actually watching Michael Jackson Live.
It was another happy night at SuperDeluxe. To share this feeling, I taped some of their performance. I hope you enjoy these short videos!

[...] On their third business event that was combined with the RESFEST Japan closing party, they had a super-school girl dancer called Strong Machine No.2 and the Michael Jackson tribute performers mj-spirit as guests. Then these drunken adults started to open bottles of champagnes with award winning film makers Traktor as very special guest at the venue - quite drunk, that easily all the business cards were flying away. On this day, Snack Nagako suddenly became famous as a crazy hostess bar, full of drunks from the movie industry. talk show with the perfomers “Hey I like your work, can you make a TV commercial for us?” - You might overhear a conversation like this.
