Snoopy exhibition

Snoopy? Yes, a whole full exhibition currently at the International Forum in Tokyo! The creme de la creme of Japans artists, architects and designers gathered to design their own version of Snoopy: from Yayoi Kusama’s “Dot Obsession” sculptures to a KleinDytham Architecture “Bowhouse”, various cute Snoopy outfits by either Eri Utsugi, mintdesigns or Theatre Products, 3D animation by Chie Morimoto and and and….. endless variations and each designed with a lot of dedication to the beloved Snoopy character. Quite unique to see with how much different stuff and yet own typical style people could come up with. Teamlab Inc. made a 5 panel animated drawing, a little story drawn in the old fashioned Japanese style with Snoopy appearing here and there. Namaiki went crazy as usual, creating: “the dogs alter egos: free flying ace, farmer snoopy and dancing fool snoopy in new reversible formats with built in dark side.” Those were amongst my favorites! Shigeru Ban used the opportunity to educate a little about constructing houses, especially his projects in Sri Lanca. Naoto Fukasawa’s theme about Happiness was “to sleep, to walk, to be cool!” exactly what his slick characters were all about.

The exhibition was devided into an Art Stage, where all the above could be found and a Living Stage - which turned out to be some cleverly wrapped marketing trick with Snoopy branding in minde - adding more quirky flavour to the exhibition. One could find everything from Triumph lingerie with Snoopy motives hidden amongst all the stiching, a huge Snoopy chocolate house, a big green Snoopy sculpture out of real plants by flower designer Nicolai Bergmann, even a Snoopy nail art painting out of real fake nails (that made me laugh a bit, to be honest), a 700000Yen worth neclace by 4*C, a Snoopy lamp by Mino Paper and Bokusha and finally a Japanese doll style Snoopy by Yutaka Maeda.

At the end of the exhibition you suddenly find yourself in a shop full of Snoopy products - which is not really a surprise, since we are in Japan first of all and since the whole idea of the exhibition is some sort of clever marketing experiment. Nevertheless, it is a great exhibition with very high quality art works from all your favourite designers all together. Worth going and on until January 15th, 2006.
