“Traveling” to me, is seeing something you’ve never seen, eating something you’ve never tasted, and experiencing something that will change your values. In that sense, you don’t necessarily need to go far to experience something new. “Traveling” can be simply reading a book, watching a movie or taking to people.
There is one exhibition on right now where you can get a “traveling” feeling. As a part of biennial public-art exhibition, Daikanyama Installation, MOT: MUSEUM OF TRAVEL has created a space where you can obtain a “new perspective” through various talk events, seminars and exhibits.
I came across this exhibition by accident. Strolling down Daikanyama area, loads of pictures pinned down on the wall attracted my attention. The pictures on the wall were gathered from the public, based on the theme “pictures that you took during overseas travel” and were grouped by country.
Gazing on them, you can tell many areas have distinctive colors (such as khaki colors from desertic districts, Crayola colors from tropical districts) and even the levels of sunbeams varied. It was fun to compare areas, because you rarely get a chance to view this many numbers of places at once.
Underneath the pictures, souvenirs from various countries were displayed. Belgium souvenirs “Manikin Piss,” “Russian doll” form Russia, “Piranha” from Colombia… Well I guess, like many Japanese people are not wearing “happi coat” or “yukata” everyday, these souvenirs shows certain “Stereotypes” attached to that country. Anyway, those were just interesting!
There were also participatory exhibits, such as “Marking Mapping.” There were three global maps on the wall. Each of them had different titles, “the country I would love to visit, ” “the country I’ve never been to” and “the country where I dreamed about in my childhood.” And you put the sticker on the appropriate places. It was interesting to see the stickers on the three maps showed slightly different geography. They even served different drinks of the world at the cafe in the courtyard. I had Russian tea.
Visiting MOT, it came as a fresh reminder that the there were so many countries, and the ones I know were only part of the world. It is a shame to admit, but there were countries I’ve never heard of or didn’t know the location of. I guess Japan might be the same. For many oversea people…”Japan? Where is it?”
