TDW - Best Performance

7 Nov 2005 Category: Events & Exhibitions, Japan, Music, Worldwide

This is it! The TDW (Tokyo Designers Week) is over! One full week of running to every possible event, exhibition, seminar and party. It was absolutely amazing (and now we are absolutely tired…..). The next few DailyCandies will focus on a few extra highlights of last week and the full report will follow tomorrow! Here we go:

Of all parties, the finely selected combination of 3 amazing performances last Saturday night at SuperDeluxe just made this event the ultimate winner of the whole week (or maybe even the whole last months).

Optrum~Death technica started with a breath-taking noise set (I am not a big noise fan, but they just had so much energy- the whole place was vibrating and everyone moving to their powerful rhythms). Click here for a little video-appetizer. The performers were Shin Yoichiro, Ito Atsuhiro and Ujino Munemitu: one of them playing a huge neon-light-guitar, the other rocked with hard drums in the background while the DJ had the weirdest set up: a mixer connected to a guitar, which is also connected to a power drill, effects, mixer and 2 turntables with 4 magnet tickers on each, which connect to little pencil ends he screwed onto his records. Bizarre! To create different sounds with the mixer, all sorts of ingredents were used. The last one looked something like a strawberry shake in the end (but you really couldn’t tell in the dark.). Once the song was completed and the mixer done, Optrum shared their shake with the audience. Music to drink!

After that came a performance by Applehead. Now that was probably to make sure, you remember to be in Japan: everything was pink and plastic, fluffy fur costumes, bunny ears and Mickey Mouse voice rock. Perfect! Smell here.

In the little breaks one could enjoy SDLX allstars such as Namaiki and DaDaKingz visuals paired with Keiji Ito (visuals and DJ).

The very last and very late performance was not to be missed. German progressive rock hero Mani Neumeier from GuruGuru came to do a special set: a breathtaking drum solo (you would never believe this guy is over 60!). After that, he shook some metal plates, ashtrays and bowls out of a yellow sack and started to play these on the floor. (Here is a little movie)So beautiful! After that he went back to his drums to collaborate with DJ sounds from L?K?O (they released an album together) and a very Japanesy dressed performer with some kind of sampler guitar. Whow!

The lesson I learned from that evening: it is always worth dropping in at SuperDeluxe, even if you think Designers Week is almost over!

  3. Another participatory exhibits. Choosing one photo from here, you have to find same image from the hundreds of pictures on the wall. So, which country is your picture from? You can use binocle.
