The PechaKucha Trilogy - Part 3

Big names big names!

What a night! If the Tokyo Designer’s Week lives up to what the Pecha Kucha UK special promised last night, we are going to have an unbearably good week!!

Written by Uleshka

Impatient Tokyo design fans showed up really early at SuperDeluxe yesterday night soon realizing that the theme of Britain was being carried right through to the time-keeping - that is to say, like Britain’s trains and buses, everyone showed up late! Impatiently listening to Tokyo-style-weird DJane Miss Mayutan all the while waiting for action, people started sliding nervously on their seats, while all the heavy weight UK designers slowly popped in piling up next to the bar (where else could they be all night…?).

Finally, Mark and Astrid from KleinDytham started the first of 3 little PechaKucha sets (and praising all the upcoming events with free drinks!) with Rhydian Phillips from the British Embassy giving a little introduction to the UK part in the Designers Week.

introducing some UK designers’ work

Now, how can I give justice, to all the amazing designers speaking last night, by writing a summary!? Impossible, I suppose but I hope to give you a little taste to most of them and remember: Tokyo Designer’s Week still lies in front of us!

One of the first was Andy Davey from TKO talking about his desire to go to space one day in order to look down on earth. Paired with that comes his passion about robots and science fiction: introducing the characters of films or modern technology, which touched him most.

Andy’s choice

Interesting as always on PechaKucha nights is to see what it is that people choose to present. One would think that designers are eager to show their work, but in fact, it seems like many of them prefer to talk about things relating to their work or their life… or in the case of Steven Price from Plan B Studio: entirely about themselves. Now that was maybe a bit too much…

When I had a little chat with Tom Dixon, who will have a speech at Bloomberg today as part of Design Week (and already presented his own works at PechaKucha London Vol.2), he said he found the 20 slides for 20 seconds concept very interesting, since it is such an open format, that designers come up with all sorts of things to talk about and reveal so much about themselves, that he found it very scary sometimes…

Conran’s inspiration

THIS is the best selling item at the Conran Shop

Sebastian Conran chats to the room

Design giant Sebastian Conran was certainly one of the very big names to present at PechaKucha. He mixed all sorts of visuals from family photos, to his very first designs, the cars he drove, the objects that inspired him and what sells best at the Conran shop. Very refreshing presentation!

One interesting fact in the design process of a very organic-looking set of weights he talked to us about, was the excitement of the designers being able to define the exact weight of a final object before it even exists. How? Design your desirable shape, type in your desired weight in the special software and the perfect rendering will be delivered in seconds. Amazing!

The presentation that absolutely blew my mind was the work shown by Thomas Heatherwick. Until yesterday evening all I ever knew of him was that folding footbridge in Northwest London, that is curling up and won all those awards already. (When I later on talked to him and called it “erected bridge” he gave me such a sweet innocent giggle saying that he never thought about it that way, that I actually believe him.)

The other work I knew, because it shocked me so much when I saw it in the papers one day was his giant sculpture in Manchester, that just looks like a huge sea urchin, same size as the tower of Pisa, but leaning 10 times as much to the side. Quite frightening but absolutely stunningly beautiful at the same time.

His presentation at PechaKucha had 20 slides - like everybody else - and each one of them was another of his mind blowing projects. His work ranges from products and urban design to civil engineering and public art. He spends a lot of time thinking and inventing new materials, creating unseen objects like a huge bridge entirely out of glass… I was totally overwhelmed!

After another beer break, one might imagine what happened to all the British designers: the later the evening, the funnier the presentations.

Luke Pearson from Pearson Lloyd Design Ltd had a go with a selection of what they find peculiar or inspiring in life (besides showing a few of their projects like the Virgin Atlantic new upper class suite for the business class that won heaps of awards). Amongst that he showed a brush collection they seem to cultivate at their offices with brushes from all over the world and all sets of time and - funny for us to see - the wooden keys you get at restaurants or hotels to lock your shoes away in Japan.

Another very enthusiastic presentation came from Silas Hickey (video creator and designer) & Teruo Kurosaki (the producer of Tokyo Designers Block, who eventually hid in the crowd, so it was all up to Silas).

Silas himself was so passionate about surfing, the history, the making of a board,….. everything relating to surfing, that he simply got everyone excited about it.

Jim McNiven from Kerb Ltd. just threw their characters on the screen and had all sorts of stories about clients and the fun they have when creating their games etc. If you have a closer look at those illustration you will get the idea.

another hit in Finland

Paul West from Form, Michael Young, who is also one of the panel members of the 100% design in Tokyo this year and, and, and….. what can I say? They were all there, all presenting so everyone was just carried away by so much design, thought, fun and life - and the designer’s week hasn’t even officially started yet.

Where is the fun at this week?

Mark and Astrid gave another little hint with their Where is the fun at this week? presentation. I think the answer to that is: Go to SuperDeluxe every night, meet the real designers and just follow them to the next party! You can start with the CHIVAS Regal party at SuperDeluxe tonight (free drinks) after the 100% Design Week Party.

See you around!
