Screen Fields is a group exhibition currently shown at the Session house in Kagurazaka, Tokyo. 5 strong women from Berlin came together and showed their work in Tokyo for the first time. Here are my favorite ones:
Saskia Wendland Having studied Kalligraphy in Kyoko for a couple of years, Saskia’s work was all about movement, work process and “the way” as the final aim. Her piece toward zero shows physical exercise in Xiangyang Park, the workers at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, a roof painter and a monk sweeping. In contrast to her colorful visuals was another monitor that had a simple bird in black and white that seemed to come out of nowhere, walking along the shore, and disappearing again by walking out of the picture. Zen!
Masayo Kajimura Spending all her life in Berlin, Masayo’s piece the somnambulist was a narrative about the loss of her Japanese grandmother, who always wanted to visit her in Germany but suddenly died before she managed to realize the long awaited journey. A very sensitive story told in a tryptich, with the screens titled “ghosts”, “girls” and “grandmother”.
Nine Budde In her video installation Citypoen (Nashmiri sain doyo) Nine emphasized the twingled situation of a German exhibiting in Japan writing a poem in German for Japanese artist Hanayo who is living in Berlin. Hanayo translated it into Japanese and also speaks the words being the main figure in Nane’s short poetic piece. Looking at this German art piece in Japan, one is touched by the fairytale atmosphere and the gentle sound of the little, magic movie.
The exhibition is part of the German year in Japan and will be shown at Session House from 1.10.2005 (Sat) - 10.10.2005 (Mon) 12.00h- 20.00h
