A few weeks ago I got an invitation to a press conference/party for a design event. Even though sent back the RSVP with “will attend” checked, I actually had no idea what is was about because they didn’t say much in the invitation. All that was said was it is an “international business exhibition for design in Tokyo Dome (baseball stadium) next year.” It seemed like they wanted to keep it as secret before the press conference. On the day of conference, I was bit nervous because I had never been to press meeting. What’s it all about? Will I understand what they say? Moreover, the venue was a very posh hall in Yebisu. “Oh no, I don’t know what to wear….”.
When I got there, many people with nice dresses had already showed up. At the center table, lots of delicious looking appetizers were laid out, representing cuisines from around the globe. “Wow, it must be a big international event”, I thought. Then the presentation started.
The conference started off with a speech by one of the organizers, Yu Kaburagi(Biken International). Gradually, details of the design meeting next year were revealed. The name of the event is “*ALLRIGHTSRESERVED INTERNATIONAL DESIGN BUSINESS MEETING 2006” and they will turn Tokyo Dome into huge design showroom.
Helping business and design to be closer, Tokyo dome will be divided into 3 sections. The playground area will be a showcase for the companies. The bullpen and locker room will be galleries for the creators. And the seats area will be open for whoever wants to show their independent works. Other fun events such as award competition, seminars, workshops, and concerts will take place. It’s going to be massive.
Well, I was surprised at how big the event would be, I was also surprised at how young the organizers were (they are from my generation!). They sure have a lot of courage, running a huge event like this. Towards the end of conference, there was the surprise. AFRA, the human beat-box, showed up on the stage and performed. Everybody enjoyed this great surprise.
I’m looking forward to visiting this meeting next year!
