Today was such a nice day, I couldn’t help but go out somewhere and it just so happens that recently my friend told me about a “Tropical Greenhouse” in Yume-no-shima. Yume-no-shima, funnily enough, used to be a huge public garbage dump. Since I am from the countryside, I was very curious about this place . “Yume-no-shima Tropical Greenhouse Dome” is situated next to garbage disposal facilities, and it uses the heat from burning garbage to grow tropical plants.
The first thing I saw at the station square in Shinkiba Station was a totem pole. Wondering to myself “Are they trying to be tropical? Wait. Are totem poles from tropical countries?” I headed toward the green house in Yume-no-shima Park. The Tropical Greenhouse Dome was much bigger than I imagined. Other than big domes, there was a learning center and a movie theater to learn about plants.
Everything looked great, but I loved the room for carnivorous plants the most! This room reminds me of the famous Hayao Miyazaki animation “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.” In the movie, Nausicca cultivates spore-bearing plants from the dead ocean…. I don’t know what I’m talking about. I’m a geek. Anyway, looking at the Butterworts and Sarawak’s pitcher plant, I thought they were well-designed.
Wandering though the Tropical Dome I suddenly remembered that I loved nonflowering plants when I was a kid. This place made me want to grow moss and fern in my apartment. I’m sure my landlord wouldn’t let me, though. Overall, I had so much fun here. I will be back soon!
