Currently, we have a guest in our office, IMGSRC. His name is Jiacong “jay” Yan, from L.A. He just completed his degree at UCLA Design|Media Arts Department on June and is starting a grad school program at the end of this month. He came to see his friend Mike, who is working at IMGSRC. The weird thing is that Jay is the kind of person who prefers to work on projects rather than walk around Shibuya, drinking sake and singing karaoke in Japan. So Jay is staying in our office for a while, and is going to take on some kind of interesting project for us.
Though he is still young, he has already exhibited his works in galleries as a media artist. This March, his work, “whisper” was exhibited at Telic, electronic media art gallery in Los Angeles. Using freshly cut lilies, he created an interactive installation. If you place your ear to the blossom, the flower whispers some seductive word to you. Underneath the table, speakers were hidden, and sound travel along the stem of the lily…. This work will be shown in NY soon.
His other work, “nanomandala” is done for Victoria Vesna, media artist and professor at UCLA. From 2003 to 2004, Victoria and Nanoscientist Prof. James Gimzewski organized a big exhibition at Los Angeles County Museum of Art(LACMA), called NANO. ”nanomandala” incorporates Tibetan Buddhist artwork called “sand-mandala” and nano technology. Using an electronic microscope, highly detailed images of sand grains were captured and these were put into an animation gradually zooming out (and eventually using a regular camera) to show the sand mandala in it’s entirety. The concepts reminds me of “Powers of Ten” by Charles and Ray Eames a little, but everything you see in Jay’s work is real - there is no animation or drawing techniques used.
Jay will be here 2 more weeks. I’m sure he will create something very cool for IMGSRC! Keep up the great job, Jay!
