A little while ago, we had a very charming lady from Mexico coming to IMG SRC for a little graphic design chat: Analia Vasquez Solomonoff showed her work and brought lots of colorful little samples and presents from Mexico on her trip through Japan. Thank you so much! How refreshing to see something so different. Most items had a very handmade-rough feeling about them, especially those she produced together with Zoveck, a group of designers in Mexico. Very striking was the big San-To statue that looks like a pro-wrestler with wings. I thought this would fit perfectly in our award-shelf and was secretly waiting for a client to point out to that one. I didn’t have to wait long! When Taku Satoh came for the seminar yesterday, he said: “I know that one! I’ve got the same!”. Energetic young lady! I wonder who else belongs to the secret club of San-To award keepers in Tokyo…

These designs are amazing, truly Mexican. I myself am also Mexican, I’m living in Monterrey a city to the north, where we are in our infancy in design compared to Mexico City. But none-the-less we are very proud of our designing style.

So “improvement” does not necessarily mean “make it look all futuristic and cool ooh this would look great in my new hover car”. However, the rash of designers setting out to improve the design of the humble clothes hanger are actually managing to combine some pleasing designs with a marked improvement in the actual functionality of the design, too. Well, most are.
