Earthquakes and fire are probably the two most common fears- somewhere subconsciously- when living in Japan. Fire extinguishers are simply everywhere- in your home, in front of your house, on the streets, office, train stations… and here and there you run over some nice information graphics about what to do, when an earthquake comes- or how to deal with other dangers that might come along with it. There even is an “Earthquake and fire learning center” in Ikebukuro, the Ikebukuro Bosaikan. A friendly elephant welcomes you at the entrance (there must be a mascot somewhere…) and helpful staff explain exactly how to behave during a fire, how to actually use one of these extinguishers and provide you with general emergency tips. The fun thing is, that you are allowed to really try things out by yourself. There are smoke and fire simulators, an earthquake-imitation room, that shakes like crazy (and you have to climb under the table very quickly, not to get hit by a dish falling out of the cupboard) and they even have a burning-house-maze with smoke and dimmed emergency light, that makes it really hard to find your way out and not to panic! To be honest, after I went and experienced all that, I really started to get scared (but maybe that is just me). What they did not allow us to play with, were those first-aid-learning-dolls. I can guess that you are supposed to learn that heart-reviving-pumping technique with those, but why do they have a box instead of a head? And why do they all have breasts, too? I can only hope that this is not a very bad joke…

  7. So “improvement” does not necessarily mean “make it look all futuristic and cool ooh this would look great in my new hover car”. However, the rash of designers setting out to improve the design of the humble clothes hanger are actually managing to combine some pleasing designs with a marked improvement in the actual functionality of the design, too. Well, most are.
