Greetings everyone, I am Tester_KNYM (knym is short for “Kanayama”, my name). This section of PingMag - as the title says - involves me testing various interesting things. I’m hoping to keep the variety fairly wide in my experiments.
Ever since I was a university student, I’ve been interested in getting my hands dirty with testing bits and bobs of electronic equipment. I remember I used to go to the big rubbish dump at my uni and retrieve various objects, which I would dismantle with a kind of obsessive glee, causing short circuits and sparks. I also used to buy electronic kits from a place called Akizukidenshi in Akihabara (Tokyo’s “electronic town”) and put them together.
In those days I would refer to myself as
THE JUNKYARD GENIUS
High was my desire to create, build and test, but it was held back by the kind of generic student poverty that meant everything I ate had the word “Instant!” in the title. It was also held back by the lack of any real vision or plan, so gradually this hobby faded into nothing (also due to the fact that spending all your money on things you don’t reeeeeeeeeeeaally need as a student in Tokyo, the world’s most expensive city, isn’t particularly clever).
AS A RESULT of this lack of a plan was the unfortunate circumstance of me not being able to find a job after university, even though I started looking for work almost 3 months before I graduated. When I finally found myself in the “real world” after graduation, I sort of fell into a Telemarketing part-time job. It was then that I decided “Right. Things are becoming a bit crap. It’s time to get some skills to get a proper job”. And that I did.
< ?php knympic(”knym_IMGSRC.jpg”,”"); ?> With a newfound sense of purpose, I joined the award-winning IMG SRC as part of their colourful team.
SEARCHING FOR THRILLS IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES
I’m not usually satisfied by interacting with something that has been made by another person, like for example watching a movie etc. To really feel alive I have to make something myself, even if it involves being electrocuted by rogue sparks (but I’m the kind of person who gets excited by electrocution anyway. Wait, that came out wrong).
Anyway it turns out that IMG SRC is creating a new online magazine, which is something the President, Ito-san, has wanted to do for a while. We had a meeting in which we decided what kind of content would go in and this is where KNYM_Tester was born…
Kanayama-kun, anything from you?
he asked. I replied,
< ?php knympic(”knym_100shiki.jpg”,”"); ?>Well there is this site called Hyakushiki which basically showcases amusing or interesting websites from all over the world, one each day. I’d like to do something like that but with interesting bits of technology.
Ito-san thought for a little while…
Ok it’s settled. “Tester_KNYM”. Sounds fun.
Which is how I find myself here, ready to start testing! Tester_KNYM is born! Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu!

It is I, Tester_KNYM
