Ask the average person what Tokyo nightlife means to them and they might mumble something about drunken salarymen urinating on lamp-posts or ducking and weaving through the throbbing masses of commuters and party-goers bathed in the neon glow from the gigantic advertising billboards that adorn the buildings all around. What you don’t often hear people mention however, are tales about girls dressed in kimonos doing some ikebana then vomiting on each other, or a foreign artist cutting his face and chomping off bits of sheet glass with his teeth as part of an intensely bizarre sound performance in an underground club.
Well today is your lucky day as the playtime vol.2 event at Superdeluxe had all this and more. Truly impressive was the performance from Australian artist Justice Yeldham, with his Dynamic Ribbon Device. He had a triangular piece of plate glass with a contact microphone, wired to effects pedals hanging around his waist.
After squeezing a pack of sex lubricant on his face, he started rubbing the device against his face, sliding the glass back and forth. The sound was a wild combination of the vibrations he created by screaming and blowing against the glass - twisting a few knobs for further distortion. A lesser artist may have stopped there but Justice Yeldham continued his act by biting the glass into smaller pieces, to create a higher pitched sound. A very intense performance, some truly new sounds, lots of blood, shattered glass and stunned audience faces, gripped at once with a tantalising mix of both terror and delight.
